Jallo Festival

Recently I attended the Jalloo festival in Miramichi on June 20th and 21st. I was able to get some good information and was able to meet Bill Kroyer; an animation director who worked on one of my favorite movies. The original Disney's 1982 film "TRON"!

Bill went on to tell us how instead of the software we have now that allows us to see a our objects we are creating and move and set key frames and the in-betweens are filled in. He explained that there was no way to view the lightcycle chase until it was rendered and they had to figure our long hand all calculations for how much the cycle would move and when it would rotate. Then by hand he would have to type in the computer the X, Y, Z axis translation and rotation for all the objects for every frame! Imagine plugging into a computer a 10 minute shot which has 14,400 frames for every object!

Bill also showed us pictures from when he was working with Disney and how he was one of the first animators to use computer animation. He showed us a Music video he made for Mick Jagger's song "Hard Woman" which used Vectors to create characters!

Below is brief description of what he is doing now.

As Senior Animation Director at Rhythm & Hues Studios he directed animation on scores of commercials and many feature films, including Cats and Dogs, Garfield, and Scooby Doo.

He currently serves as Director of Digital Arts at the Dodge College of Film at Chapman University in Orange, California and as co-Chair of the Science and Technology Council of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, and Governor of the Academy’s Short Films and Feature Animation Branch.
